Presidential PeanutsA Vote for Pecans Legend has it that George Washington had wooden teeth, but that apparently didn't stop our first President from eating pecans. He munched them all the time. So did Thomas Jefferson.
America's love affair with pecans goes way back. In fact, back to a time before there even was an America.According to the National Pecan Shellers Association there is a lot more to pecans than pecan pie. For instance, pecan is actually an Algonquin American Indian word that translates as "all nuts requiring a stone to crack." Because the nuts grew wild, pecans became a staple food for certain American Indian tribes.
Spanish colonists were among the first to cultivate pecan trees in northern Mexico. The first trees cultivated in the U.S. were in Long Island, N.Y., in 1772.

Peanut and tree nut allergies are the most severe of all food allergies, affecting approximately 3 million Americans, and causing 100 -- 150 deaths from anaphylactic shock annually and many more hospitalizations. Little bit o' HistoryGurley's Foods was built in 1953 by Andy Goedert in the small rural town of Willmar, Minnesota. He built the bakery to produce cookies for the Archway Cookie Company. By 1964, Andy, knowing that he would need to diversify, found a small, highly reputable nut roasting company in St. Paul called "Gurley's". He bought the company and started producing Gurley's nut products there and Gurley's cookies in Willmar. In 1966, Archway, just as Andy had predicted, built their own bakeries. If it weren't for his instincts, we would be gone today. Over the years, Andy's customers grew accustomed to his high quality products but they couldn't get them anywhere outside of Minnesota. Eventually this led to the mail-order brochure. Today, Gurley's Foods represents, without question, the highest quality in nuts available. We are simply the best! |
